Introduction from the Great White North–Well not white yet!

Greetings everyone,

I happened upon your cooperative through a tweet that I followed, and was absolutely thrilled to find this site. As soon as I started reading some of the entries (I haven’t been through all of them yet), I knew that I needed to be a part of this conversation.

My name is Stephen Hurley and I have been teaching near Toronto, Ontario for nearly 28 years. I have always been passionate about innovation in education and, as the same constraints that have affected education in your country have become the norm here in Canada, my energy has been directed more toward transformation. I believe that public schools have been toyed with enough!

I don’t believe our schools are broken. I really think that they are working just fine. In fact, they are running as efficiently now in 2010 as they ever have. As many of you have already pointed out, the model is the thing that doesn’t work any more.

So, I look forward to contributing to the conversations here.

A little personal information. I’ve held a lot of different positions within our public schools including classroom teacher, curriculum consultant and teacher educator. This year I’ve taken the position of “planning time teacher”. Not sure if that title resonates with you, but I spend my day going around the school teaching music, drama, dance (!) and some phys-ed to K-8 students so that contractual release time can be provided. I’ll be saying more about my insights around that at some point.

I spent a few years writing for Edutopia’s blog initiative, and have currently shifted my focus to the Canadian scene, contributing to the work of the Canadian Education Association. I’ve also recently started a personal blog site on similar topics

I’ve been married for 5 years, (a late start), and am watching a 3 1/2 and 19 month old grow into this world.

Spare time? I’m a musician and love to write. Still get some time to read as well, but that’s a bit of a gift right now.

Looking forward to being part of this group, and catching up on some of what I’ve missed.

Stephen Hurley

About Stephen Hurley

I have been involved in public education for 29 years, and am passionately committed to the idea of effective, powerful learning experiences for all participants. A musician, technology-watcher, father, husband, I find life in the world of education, even when the conversations get a little contentious. If I were to be doing anything else right now, it would be hosting my own syndicated radio program on--you guessed it--education. I blog in a few spots. My personal blog can be found at http://teachingoutloud.org. I can also be found hanging around http://www.cea-ace.ca and, most recently, http://voicEd.ca I can be found on twitter as @stephen_hurley
