Pre-service teacher Larry Cambpell contributes this #blog4nwp post.
Writing is so important for students’ learning, and this project, the National Writing Project (NWP), is invaluable in preparing teachers to develop lesson plans involving writing strategies for students.
We want to compete globally – [we want to] get students writing. To get students writing teachers
need strategies; they need the NWP.
I am a pre-service teacher taking classes with the NWP, and I have been amazed at how these strategies help my students understand the content better than traditional didactic instructional strategies do. We claim as a nation that we want to compete with the Indias and Chinas of the world, yet we cut funding to [educational programs] in critical need areas. We are already behind and without developing writing skill we will fall even further behind in this Global Economy.
