We Need Student Voices

Could each of us on the Co-op commit to finding a student voice to add to our group? I was sitting round a campfire last night with some kids who were complaining about not getting to talk about substantive issues in school, and I kept asking them when they were going to make a difference and do something rather than complain.  One asked me if she began blogging would I help her get a readership and read it ahead of time to keep her from “making a fool of herself.” Of course I said yes, but I know my reading ahead of time isn’t necessary–she’s an amazing thinker!

What if we tried to find students who would share their ideas of the purpose of school and have a series of posts?  Anyone interested?

  1. YES, I commit. I will bring a student here. As you know Paula, I too think this is incredibly important, and thank you for this.

  2. I’m in, and I’ll raise you an Albemarle County Student Union. Of elementary- and middle-schoolers.

My thanks to you & those kids,

  3. Awesome! We have been chatting about this on the college FB page. Thanks for the invite, I will let the student network know.

  4. Hi Paula,
This is a great idea. I would love to participate but I couldn’t get this going till mid-August at the latest though early September is a more realistic deadline. I already have some very articulate former grade 6 students in mind. I’m also wondering if we could include any of the students that participated in the SOS webinar the other night? I didn’t get to listen but I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to contact them. What kind of deadline are you looking at?

  5. Paula, if you know any students who’d like to write about math, I’d love to talk with them. (I have a blog, and I’m working on a book to which I’d like to add a few more young voices.)
