An Introduction

I am a blogger for IDEA, and through Melia Dicker and Adam Burk, I was invited to post here at the Coop. I just thought that I should give an introduction before I begin contributions. I became aware of democratic education through an offbeat series of events (but who doesn’t find out about it that way). In a personal blog I began to explore the meaning of education. I posted a comment on a website called Stop Homework. The author of Stop Homework, Sara Bennett, put me in contact with IDEA, and here I am today.

I am not a professional educator, and am just beginning to learn about the traditional education system functions, let alone the alternatives. I really don’t know where this interest will take me, but I am excited to find out. My personal history with school is muddled and deprived, so through the process of writing I aim to figure out why cases like mine and that of my friends and peers are so common. I want to answer the question, “What is all of this schooling really about, and how can it be made into something more rewarding and helpful to all?”

I will be a guest blogger. I am most interested in getting a peak into conversations about education, reading what others are saying, asking questions, and dropping my 2¢. I would like to express my views in comments as well as posts.

Greetings,

Zuleka

  1. Welcome, Zuleka. As far as not being a ‘professional educator’ I think we probably have too many of them already. I look forward to your fresh, un-educator point of view.

  2. Zuleka, this is exactly it:

What is all of this schooling really about, and how can it be made into something more rewarding and helpful to all?

Well put. Welcome – and thank you.

What questions do you have for us?

    Best regards,
    C

  3. Zuleka, Huge, huge welcome! I have been a fan of yours over at the IDEA blog for awhile. I’d say pretty much everyone here would agree that:

“my personal history with school is muddled and deprived.”

That’s it, and you are in really good company. I can’t wait for your first post.

  4. Zuleika, your contributions to the Coop as a college student will add a fresh perspective! You’re experiencing firsthand many of the issues around education that folks discuss on this blog. You’re also designing your own major, right? Look forward to continuing to hear about what you’re learning and thinking about.
