The NWP is a great hope for human growth

I just spent a week in Mexico. I read curriculum whenever reading time popped up. Thanks to the National Writing Project (NWP) and a study group of Teacher Consultants (TC) I was into a fascinating book, Hidden Gems, which steers us towards a new focus for engaging students in authentic writing. It is just one of the changes in my life brought about by my participation in a Summer Institute with the Great Valley Writing Project. My life, my career, and my personal satisfaction have blossomed since then. I now am more involved in the profession. I hang frequently with other teachers motivated to be more successful and to share new research and understanding.

The school where I teach has undergone significant change since I brought Day of the Writer and lessons for fellow faculty members on how to begin enacting writing across the curriculum to the campus two years ago. The students are simply writing more and enjoying it more. The focus to make writing an art form is still in its infancy, but with the professional support and collaborative actions of TCs and the NWP change is being created.

Nothing I have been involved in over the past twenty years has been as enjoyable and promising. NWP is a great hope for human growth and experience, in school and beyond.

We must continue to focus on writing and democratic growth in the classroom, National Writing Project is doing that.
