When Reproach is beyond Reproach

Education in America has been on a path of continual downfall that is laced with sections that are inaccessible and are so sensitive that are deemed incapable of being habitable. We have moved toward the dark edge of the path where the light at the end of the tunnel is abyss and is lamented with the sorrows of those who seek profit, power, and novelty without producing the gift of knowledge and esteem for those who are demanding it. We have moved toward the edge that has demonized students and stripped their rights and identities away, that has calloused and solidified the hearts of once compassionate educators, and that has driven those who are responsible for protecting the promise of education to protecting the promise of a bigger paycheck.

However, it seems that our move to this end of the path has gone for too long without steadfast reproach for those who we have publicly entrusted to protect the sovereignty of a democratic education that delivers on its promise to free the beautiful youthful minds of children from the barriers of the societal constraints that present themselves in western society. Those who are publicly trusted to protect education’s promise have seemingly turned away in turn for protecting their sense of authority over children and their personal lives. It seems that we are no longer, as a nation, interested in educating children so that they can become the next generation that is capable of challenging the authority and correcting the mistakes that their past generation created. Education, it seems, has become the scapegoat for the movement to silence the minds and mouths of the youth who see that what’s going on is wrong, to instill an undeniable sense of complacency, and to remove every sense of self that has been instilled within them. It seems as if this system of education that has been in place for far too long has gone beyond its state of being grossly ineffective and has grown into the state of being the gross silencer.

Nevertheless, it seems as if this crusade against creativity, ingenuity, and individualism will live on for generations to come. As long as those who we have been entrusted with the authority to disseminate the promise of an equitable public education are distracted with the promise of having authority over the minds and lives of children who are simply hungry for innovation and curiosity we will be stuck in time. We will become a nation that is silent and dangerously complacent to the point where those who innovate will become an endangered species and those who challenge will be hailed as brave when they are actually something more, when they are actually just intelligent. And that is why this crusade against creativity, ingenuity, and individualism must come to a halt, we must bring those who have brought our education system to a system balanced on the scale of power and struggle to reproach. Those who are responsible for the downfall must be brought before the people to explain themselves, to be tried by a jury of those whose lives they have dammed, because they are not beyond reproach and they should be reminded of that.

  1. Jabreel, those who betray the public trust fail to realize that in schooling people to become followers, they are, in fact, ensuring the creation of underground leaders. They look at what they do without ever watching kids at play, wherein kids learn how to communally shift rules on the fly to deal with obstacles, disruptions, and disagreements in relational ways.

    How do you see your leadership and the leadership of your peers (if it’s even “leadership” by any traditional means) differing from that offered by the public officials who miss the point of education?
