The Education Hunger Game: School as Cornucopia

With all the hype about the movie in the back of my mind, I read the book Hunger Games last weekend. There are many ways to interpret the material, whether in a broad or more narrow context; for whatever the reason, education came to my mind.

Does the font of wisdom operate to keep the colonized under control as youths seek out the (American) Dream of a good life?

How many youths will be killed off in the arena of education?

Isn’t it fun to watch the youths compete, harming one another and suffering?

What accolades, what shame will come the way of the warrior, farmer, miner and other classes?

Will there be a hero?

Will there be a crossover of gifts showered on one or more youth, coming from audience members from a different class than the youth-combatants?

Who is being entertained?

Is this merely a demonstrative project of power that keeps the colonized entrenched in “their place”?

Why are youths forced to fight a proxy war in their parents’ stead?
